I am close to, have reached, or have exceeded my quota with Altiris Recovery Solution. What can i do?

Altiris uses a quota system to control how much of your data is backed up. Once your quota has been reached, snapshots will be disabled until enough space is freed up to bring your server below your quota. Please check out this KB for instructions on checking your quota limit http://help.maximumasp.com/SmarterTicket/Customer/KBArticle.aspx?articleid=1120. This KB articles details how to handle this if you cross your quota limit.

The first thing you will want to do is adjust your exceptions to exclude any data that is non-critical to your server. This will keep Recovery Solution from backing up this data. Please visit this KB article for instructions on how to do this http://help.maximumasp.com/SmarterTicket/Customer/KBArticle.aspx?articleid=1121. New exclusions will automatically be removed from your snapshot, however it can take several days before this happens.

In addition to above, you may also want to adjust the "Delete files from the Recovery Solution Server after they have been deleted from the computer" value in your client. You can find this by opening the RS client on your server, and navigating to the Recovery Solution Server Space Management tab. By default, this valueis set to 1 week. You can lower this value all of the way down to 1 day if you would like, which will remove files that you delete from your server from your snapshot in after that time period. Keep in mind this can still take several days to reflect on your quota limit.

Under the same tab as above, you can also set the “Delete snapshots older than…” to less than two weeks. This is your retention period, and lowering this value will make RS remove snapshots for your server after less time. This can take several days to reflect on your quota limit.

2008/03/26 MaximumASP Launches New Chicago Data Center

MaximumASP, a Microsoft Gold Certified Provider of web hosting and managed IT services announced today the opening of their new data center in Chicago, Illinois. MaximumASP’s new data center will provide a broad range of IT infrastructure services, including off-site disaster recovery for the existing Louisville, Kentucky location, customer colocation services, managed private customer networks, and managed security services designed to meet the growing needs of enterprise IT customers.

MaximumASP’s new Chicago data center will provide SAN-to-SAN data replication via a private connection, allowing customers to retain backup data in two locations, with both locations having rapid-restore capabilities. The design and implementation of this system allows customers to have off-site data retention and backup capabilities without the management headaches typically found with keeping data synchronized between locations.

"This expansion was a no-brainer for us and was driven by customer demand and a need for a separate new high-power-density location," said Wade Lewis, MaximumASP's Managing Partner. "We are very proud of what this data center has to offer to our customers, and are equally proud of the efficiency and redundancy of the design."

"We work hard to stay on top of all the latest developments in the IT infrastructure industry," added Lewis. "With that priority in mind, and the steady growth of our customers, a data center expansion was a necessary move for us. After an extensive nationwide search Chicago was the location of choice for us."
2008/03/14 MaximumASP Development Team Highlighted in Microsoft’s Heroes Happen Here Global Wave Launch

MaximumASP, a Microsoft Gold Certified Provider of web hosting and managed IT services, is featured in the Microsoft Heroes Happen Here Portrait Book for their significant impact in bringing new technologies to market.

"MaximumASP's participation in the 2008 Global Launch Wave is another example of our tight knit relationship with Microsoft," said Chris Morrow, CIO at MaximumASP. "As with previous Microsoft web-related technologies, we will continue to be early adopters, whether that is testing and offering a new product like IIS 7 or SQL Server 2008 in its beta stage, or helping launch a new product to the public as we are now doing with Windows Server 2008."

MaximumASP has immediate availability of all four of the new Windows Server 2008 Editions as options in its dedicated server product line-up.

"The new features delivered by Microsoft in this Windows Server platform have distinct advantages when compared to Windows Server 2003," said Dominic Foster, CTO at MaximumASP. "The Web Edition is on par with the Standard Edition of Windows 2003 and security and performance improvements are also standouts in this release." Foster continues, "We expect good response from our customers and will continue rolling out more versions and options of the new OS over the coming months."

MaximumASP is currently offering a free beta version of SQL Server 2008 CTP 6 in a hosted environment at www.sqlserverbeta.com.

To learn more about MaximumASP new technology beta releases visit:

http://www.iis.net/spotlight/customer.aspx?Customer=MaximumASP

http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/casestudy.aspx?casestudyid=4000001217

Sure! If you remote desktop into your server in your backup window and you see the Altiris Recovery Solution icon (the red icon in your system tray) animated, it means a backup is currently running. Follow these steps to view the status of the backup that is running:

Step 1: Right click the animated red icon in your system tray and click the "Show Progress Indication" option

Step 2: You should now see a progress indicator showing you the current status of your active backup. Clicking the More Detail button will provide additional information about the backup that is running such as files remaining, transfer speed, and current file.

How to change which files are excluded from your backups with Altiris Recovery Solution

This KB explains how to add/remove files/folders from the exclusions list in Altiris Recovery Solution.

Step 1: Log into your server through remote desktop

Step 2: Locate the red Recovery Agent client in your system tray and double click on it

Step 3: Navigate to the Exludes tab

Step 4: Uncheck the Use system defaults checkbox. From this point, you can select an existing exclusion and click Edit to change the values or Remove to remove that exclusion. To add an exclusion, click the Add button. From here, you can select whether this exclusion is a folder, file, or a file type (which specifies an extension like .XML). If you excluding a file or folder, type in the path to the file or folder. If you are specfying a file type you can type it in (*.XML for instance) or click browse and select it from the list. If you excluding a file/folder, you can specify to exclude this everywhere or only on a specific drive (if you are using a wildcard exclusion). The exceptions box is used to specify files that you do not want that exclude to apply to (for instance if you are excluding *.XML, but you do not want c:\important.XML to be excluded, you can add it to the Exceptions field). Simply click Add and put in the path to the file/folder/extention that you do not want that exception to apply to.

Step 3: Browse to the Recovery Solution Server Space Management tab

Step 4: Uncheck the Use system defaults checkbox. At this point you can adjust the snapshot retention rate (Delete snapshots older than...) and the deleted file retention rate (Delete files from the recovery solution server after they have been deleted from the Computer...). The snapshot retention value removes entire snapshots after reaching the retention period length, the deleted file retention value removes files that have been deleted from your server from your shapshots after the defined period (for instance, if you set this to 7 days, deleted FILE.XML from your server...after 7 days FILE.XML would be removed from your backup to free up that space).
